Reykjavik - The tiny capital with a big bohemian heart

Image
Monday, Day 11 So the time had come to start our very last day in this beautiful country. We were the first ones to wake up at our camping site (usually we're not the first ones to wake up ever, anywhere), and the weather was really cold. The Varmaland camping site had been pretty good actually, much more quiet and less crowded. Without showers though. So we made our last camping breakfast: coffee, oatmeal and the pastries that had cost us a fortune the night before, and got on the road. We made one more "horse-stop", which was basically me stopping in the middle of the road after yelling "HORSES!!" just so I could have one last time greeting these thick-haired creatures. And it was definitely worth the stop. Always is. Off to the Big City Once we were getting closer to Reykjavik it felt like for the first time we were actually in any other "normal" country with traffic and people. Even traffic lights, which we hadn't seen nearly at all du...

Who needs a jeep when you got a Toyota Yaris

Sunday, Day 10 Lunch at Borgarnes Because of the noisy campers neither one of us slept so well last night, but we still managed to get up around 8 am. There was a line to the women's bathrooms and the one shower but luckily I didn't have to wait for that long. Did I mention I discovered the best recipe for a camping oatmeal in the morning? We bought some Quaker's instant porridge bags which are ready in just 2 min and then I add some banana and kiwi slices and a little bit of maple syrup which we got on the first day. I've never been a friend of porridge but this I could eat in the future too! Maybe add some chia seeds in it too. With the porridge we've also always made coffee (instant coffee) with creamer powder for me, and sometimes boiled some eggs or had some Skyrs, which is a quark-yoghurt like mix from Iceland. They are very good and rich with protein, not vegan friendly though. That F road - what could happen?  The day before we had talked about dr...

Snaefellnes Peninsula a.k.a. "Iceland in Miniature"

Image
Saturday, Day 9 After the North West, we wanted to dedicate two days for the Snaefellnes peninsula because the area was said to be one of the best in Iceland. At this point we didn't know how it could get any better since it seemed like everywhere we had been the views were just spectacular. First we stopped by at a fishing town called Stykkisholmur where you can also do a lot of different kinds of tours, or just enjoy the views at the harbour. We just decided to eat our lunch outside  a local tourist office and enjoy the sunny day for a while. After that we continued our way towards the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. Kirkjufell (the church mountain) This is one of the sites that many tourists look forward to when going on trip around Iceland. It's a known site from many photos, posters and even movies and it doesn't disappoint in real life either. The mountain is about 463 meters above sea level and what make the view even better are the small waterfalls next to the m...
