Lazy Mondays

Monday, Day 4

So we made it to Vik in Southern Iceland. This campground (Vik i Myrdal) definitely had the best view so far, and very good working wifi but otherwise it was a bit too small considering the amount of campers. We both had some nice cold showers since there wasn’t enough warm water for everyone but we still had to pay extra for it. But the area was nice otherwise and this time we didn’t have any problems pithing the tent since it wasn’t windy at all.

The Black Beach and a four-kilometre walk

The next morning we felt lazy and didn’t have breakfast until 11am and were ready to hit the road around 12. It was time to go see the Black Beach which was only a few kilometres away. The beach is known for its black(ish) sand, rock pillars which rise from the sea, and the basalt colums which have an incredible symmetric shape.

After this we decided we would go see a famous plane wreck that was located near by. The only problem was that we would have to walk four kilometres each way to get to this plane wreck. At that time it didn't seem like such a bad idea so we went for it. But pretty soon after starting the walk at a nearly desert like “nothingness” on a soil that was covered in small rocks, sand and stones, we both realised we could have maybe passed this experience. The walk takes about 45 min and there is nothing to see on the way. The plane wreck itself is cool obviously, since you can even walk inside it but let’s just say I would have survived with not seeing it also.

Moss canyon

Our last stop for today was Fjadrargljufur, a moss canyon which is another epic view that could very well be the filming location of Game of Thrones or some fantasy movie. I think I wouldn’t go to Iceland at any other time than in the summer, because the green nature is something incredible to experience. But of course this is coming from a Finnish person who doesn't really get overly excited about cold or snow.

Done for the day

At this point we were both getting kind of tired and my body was starting to feel the driving for four days straight.. Another thing we have noticed that your skin gets very dry here, especially hands. Maybe it’s the water or the wind, but my hands were feeling like sand paper today.

We decided to cut the day a little bit short today and try to head out earlier tomorrow. We went to another small campsite next to a waterfall, and made some quesadillas and some mexican stew with our killer camping stove. We are really getting good at this.

And so the trip continues..
